What is a DNS A Record?

A DNS A Record (also known as a host record) is one of the central records of DNS. These A Records link a domain or subdomain to an IP address and usually there are several A Records present within a DNS.

A Records and IP addresses do not necessarily match on a one-to-one basis. Several A Records can correspond to a single IP address, or physical location, representing different functions for that particular domain e.g. ftp access and webmail.
