Why is there a folder called .well-known in my webspace?

What is the .well-known folder or directory in my public_html directory? I have not created or uploaded it.

This is perfectly normal and was created automatically when your cPanel account was created.

The .well-known directory is created on all of our cPanel accounts by default as we use the AutoSSL feature. This directory is used to validate your domain name before AutoSSL will automatically issue your FREE SSL Certificate for it.

Within this there will also be a folder or directory called acme-challenge. ACME stands for Automatic Certificate Management Environment and is the communications authentication protocol used to validate domain ownership
